Local hosts Party for the whole family

This month, Laborers' Local #237 hosted its 10th annual Kids visit with Santa, at the Local Union Hall. All children of members, 12 years of age or younger, were treated to a twenty dollar gift certificate from a local business that have used signatory contractors for remodeling or new con-struction work.

According to Business Manager Steve Reimer, the holiday party is a great way to involve the entire family in a Union event.

"I think it's important that members and their families associate the Union with something more than just work," Reimer said. "Hopefully, someday these kids will look back and as they remember their holidays as something special, they will also remember the Union as having something to do with that."

In addition to gift certificates, the children and their parents are served refreshments as well as tempted by an assortment of holiday treats, including apples, oranges, chocolates, popcorn balls, candy cane, juices and snack cakes.

While the party is partly designed to bring members' families closer to the union, for the Reimers the party itself is a family affair. Daughters Tracy and Wendy are Santa's elves, ushering the children up to Santa's lap to receive their gifts. Reimer's wife, Donna, also is involved decorating the Hall and making sure things move smoothly during the event. And Steve - well he played Santa for the first time this year, taking over for former Business Manager Arvo Mattson who handed over the reins to the reindeer after nine successful years.

Rounding out Santa's entourage are former Secretary Treasurer Paul Scuglik, his wife Pauline and daughter Paula; Secretary Treasurer Tom Chambers; retiree member Julius Mianecki, who are generally charged with setting up the event and making sure every child and parent is provided for.
