"Gary Huck and Mike Konopacki are back, with a brand new collection – their sixth – of the best labor and political cartoons in the country today. These prize-winning cartoonists will have you both laughing and thinking – a dangerous combination indeed.

This collection of their work includes some of their most biting, hilarious, in-your-face efforts from 2003 to 2009, a era of Bush II, corporate greed, the health care and Employee Free Choice Act debates, incompetent politicians... a "golden era" of absurdity and bosses run amuck, the ideal setting for Huck and Konopacki’s wonderful wit and wisdom. And very, very sharp swords.

This is their best collection yet."

"I welcome the new collection of labor cartoons by Mike Konopacki and Gary Huck. I have learned to admire enormously the way they present new insights on American society in dramatic form." - Howard Zinn

Huck and Konopacki: America's Last Best Hope!
By Alec Dubro
Washington Pox Editor and Publisher

American Dread coverGary Huck and Mike Konopacki, two towering fixtures of the labor movement, are genuine unsung heroes. One of the reasons they’re unsung is that no one can rhyme Huck and Konopacki with anything but obscenities or gibberish. Too bad; they certainly deserve a song. But that’s not my job. I’m just a writer, not a lyricist.

Instead, I want to tell you about my two talented, dedicated, and accomplished artist pals. Despite the fact that they often share the same beard, Huck and Konopacki are actually two different people. Mike is a kindly, casually-dressed, small-town Midwestern boy. Gary, on the other hand, is an acerbic, natty, big-city boulevardier. Unlikely? Yes, but together these two savage cartoonists provide you with qualities labor media too often lacks: emotion and tradition. Read their cartoons, and you’re practically smothered by the history and the spirit of labor. And more than a few laughs. In fact, when you read them be sure to take frequent breaths.

That’s why I want to urge you to buy Huck and Konopacki’s latest book, The American Dread. Of course, if you’re reading this, you probably need just a slight nudge to send you to the checkout line. Well, here it is: This is the best labor cartoon book of the year, and you owe it to yourself, the movement, and the country to own it. So, buy it already. And then buy lots and lots more of them. Enough to enable Mike to buy the new clothes he so desperately needs and to get Gary a pair of Russian Wolfhounds and a high-end, pump-driven espresso maker.

I could go on, but you’d be better off memorizing every cartoon and punch line in this book. That’s the way—in fact the only way—to labor enlightenment. Trust me.
